A grassroots football coaching publication

Privacy and cookies

Your data, kept to a minimum

How We Play is free to read without giving us anything. This page explains the two optional things that do involve your data: analytics, if you accept it, and the newsletter, if you sign up.

Who runs How We Play

How We Play is an independent project written by Niall Walsh. The data controller is Niall Walsh.

For any privacy question or request, email hello@howweplayfootball.com.

Cookies and analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to see which pages and guides are used, so we know what to write next. It only runs if you choose Accept analytics. Until then, no analytics code loads and no analytics cookies are set.

If you accept, Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_…) and records things like the pages you view, roughly where you are (country or city), your device and browser, and a few actions such as following a link to Ko-fi or downloading a playbook. We don't send your name, email address or anything you type. Google signals and advertising features are switched off.

We keep your choice in your browser's local storage so we don't ask again on every page. That's needed to remember the choice and isn't used for anything else.

Changing your mind: use (also in the footer of every page). If you switch analytics off, we stop it and remove its cookies.

Google processes this data for us. See Google's privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

The Coaching Notes newsletter

If you sign up, we collect your email address only, to send you The Coaching Notes: new formation issues, occasional coaching ideas and practical resources. It isn't daily or weekly; we only send something when there's something worth sending.

Signups are handled by Mailchimp (Intuit), which stores your email and a record of when and how you subscribed. You will get an email asking you to confirm before you are added. See Intuit's privacy statement (opens in a new tab).

Every email has an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing takes effect straight away. We don't share or sell your email, and we don't add anyone to the newsletter because they downloaded a playbook or supported us on Ko-fi.

Supporting us on Ko-fi

"Support How We Play" and "Buy me a coffee" links go to our page on Ko-fi, a separate website with its own privacy policy. We don't receive your payment details. Supporting us never signs you up to anything.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you can ask to see the personal data we hold about you, to correct it, to delete it, or to object to how it's used. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk (opens in a new tab).
